Taiko at the (Gay)te

(2024 - current)

Taiko at the (Gay)te is deeply personal, reflecting the urgent need for LGBTQ+ Asian representation in Boston's cultural tapestry. As LGBTQ+ Asians, we are both targeted and overlooked, struggling to move freely and fully across spaces with sturdy, oppressive social norms and laws. This project is our response—a platform for us to express our truths, challenge stereotypes, and reclaim our narratives. Through art, we connect, build empathy, and inspire pride in our identities. By amplifying LGBTQ+ Asian voices, we will pour into a ripple effect of change, where every LGBTQ+ Asian feels seen, valued, and empowered to be their authentic selves.

Project Goals:

  • To amplify the voices and experiences of LGBTQ+ Asians in Boston through artistic expression.

  • To create a series of original creative compositions that reflect the diversity and complexity of LGBTQ+ Asian identities.

  • To engage the community in dialogue and embodied reflections on LGBTQ+ and Asian intersectional issues.

  • To establish long-term partnerships with local arts organizations for future performances and community involvement.

The body of work developed from this project, rich with the authentic voices and experiences of LGBTQIA+ Asians will respond to performance requests from various organizations and venues.

BIG THANKS to Michelle Fujii as well as Toru Watanabe from Unit Souzou for leading our composition process, The Mayor’s Office of LGBTQIA2S+ Advancement and Creative Impact for Change for sponsorship, and the Cultural Equity Incubator and the Design Studio for Social Intervention for production support.
