Older and Bolder
(2018 - current)
In 2018, Karen was selected as a Boston Artist-in-Residence by the Mayor’s Office of Arts and Culture, partnering her with BCYF Grove Hall Senior Center, and Age Friendly Boston/Age Strong Commission. During this experimental year of residency working with women ages 65 to 90, Older and Bolder was born, styled in neon colors, amplified by big, loud drums and carried by the sassy, activist ‘can-do’ spirit of its members.
Older and Bolder combats ageism and develops elder activists in Boston using taiko ensemble performance, storytelling and multimedia advocacy campaigns to develop and amplify elders’ message and collective power. Too often, elders are perceived and depicted as a group solely in need of services and care–a population who cannot contribute much. Older and Bolder boldy resists these notions - grounded in the belief that not only do elders matter, but also they are assets in our communities, who thrive on purpose and connection.
